ABSTRACT: In my senior project, I will translate one short story from Miguel Street written by V.S. Naipaul. This short story, "Until the Soldiers Came," will be translated twice using two different methods of translation. These methods, explained by Peter Newmak, are adaptation and faithful translation. I have chosen two opposed approaches to translation to make a comparison between the two products and to decide at the end which one is more applicable. Adaptation is Source Language (SL) emphasis while faithful translation is Target Language (TL) emphasis. This project starts with an introduction that gives a summary of the story and a brief biography of the writer. These are followed by an overview of the two methods propounded by Newmark, and a discussion of the problems encountered in the translation. For the reader's convenience, the source text of the story follows the Arabic translation.
